Zoho Writer 2.0 Is Launched – Ready To Run Against Word 2007

Zoho is a set of online applications that can rival Microsoft Office in terms of usage and has the added benefit of being free to use and freedom of being used anywhere. Though, while they are all free for individuals a few are subscription based for organizations. Now for the big news following online office replacements- Zoho has just launched version 2.0 of its Writer software to run against Word 2007 in both features and look. The main changes are a new interface which makes the application look very similar to Office 2007′s ribbon interface.

One major bonus is that by default certain features that are not always on screen in Office 2007 without some UI modifications are always on: saving, cut, copy, paste, and the ability to undo and redo. Smart move because honestly until I found out how to edit it I hated Word 2007 for not having certain options available at all times. However one cannot have an update without adding something new: The first of which is an improved auto-insert field for dates and page numbers in the headers and footers of any documents that you are working on. A word and character count in the status bar. Most importantly is the ability to change your page layout to being created in a landscape mode. The cream of the crop though is collaborative editing for documents. While these have been standards in both Office and Google Docs for quite sometime it is great to see a reliable web-based application able to give them both some competition.
