Top 5 Thoughts On How To Run A Business From Watching Firefly
1) Help others in need as it can come back to help you.
If you are able to help others who are not your competitors this can bring back help that you may need in the future. The main character Malcolm Reynold decides to help Simon and his sister River in their time of need. When they helped them, while not instantaneous, this offering of help ended up benefiting the crew as both Simon and River helped to save crew members on multiple occasions. While helping others will not always come back to benefit you, there are many instances where helping others does help yourself.
2) Having morals in your work gives you both return and new business.
Regardless if you are using ‘white hat’ or ‘black hat’ methods of business you do need to use morals in order to grow your business long term. No matter how you conduct your business, as shown on the series, if you are frowned upon or regular means to conduct your business, as long as you use morals you will continue to grow your client list. The crew of the ship Serenity were both smugglers as well as legitimate transporters. Whenever they did their business in either fashion as long as they did so morally they were able to have a good reputation and constantly see new business ventures.
3) People will believe what they want to believe.
People’s beliefs are hard to change, however they can be used in your favor. In the Episode “Jaynestown,” we find that a robbery that Jayne had committed earlier in his life that had gone wrong caused the townsfolk to believe he had stolen from the rich and given to them. A futuristic Robin Hood if you would, however he tried to show them the truth they just wouldn’t listen. People will believe what they want to believe and while you can’t always change that belief it is something you can use.
4) Always treat your crew(employees/partners) as equals.
If you are able to treat those that work for or with you with respect than you will be able to have both loyal and hardworking men and women at your side. The captain of serenity always makes sure to not ask of others what he is not willing to do himself and always make sure to take care of his won. By doing this he brought together a crew full of loyal people willing to go out on a limb to get what he believes needs to be done. While money can buy away the loyalty of some, if you are loyal and steadfast those who follow or work with you will follow suit as long as they are appreciated and are shown the respect that they deserve.
5) There are things outside of your control, don’t let these get to you and run with it.
Things happen that you have no control of. Accidents, disasters, etc. While at the time they do occur you might want to give up you need to keep working on it. On multiple occasions the crew of Serenity came up against obstacles in their path, many of which were unpreventable. While it would have been easier to give up or stray from their course they always made sure to get the job done. If you give up on the first sign of disaster how can you ever be sure your business was truly going to fail? Everyone suffers setbacks, the trick is to look at them as a problem or puzzle to be solved, not to let them stop you dead in your tracks.
