Stuff I Learned From Video Games

by Stuart Conover on May 16, 2012

I haven’t seen anything from Dueling Analogs I’ve truly loved in awhile. Don’t get me wrong the comic is still funny but I think that this is probably the ‘cutest’ thing they’ve done in awhile and one that will resonate with anyone whose lived through the NES/SEGA era.

Chrome 19 Adds Syncing Tabs… Wins My Heart

by Stuart Conover on May 15, 2012

Now I’ll be honest I already use Chrome full time as my browser of choice. Their new little feature though is simple in what it does but for me is the icing on the cake for Chrome. While it was the first browser that truly embraced (at least on a scale I interfaced with) the ability to sync your settings between computers it’s just brought up the best syncing option of all time – syncing tabs.

The video really explains it all. I have a desktop at home. A laptop at home. A laptop at work. I often have to bookmark or e-mail myself or use a 3rd party tool to continue reading / working on things from one location to the next.

This is no longer the case.

Now if I’m half way through an article at work and it’s time to leave I can pick right up once I get home. This is something that happens all of the time between work and my 2 systems at home. It’s so frequent (and such an old habit) that I’ve never really thought about it until now knowing that once this release is out it will never be an issue again. I’ve got 3 articles open right now to read I probably won’t get to before leaving work. It now pains me to know that if I want to read them at home I’ll have to e-mail them to myself. Curses!

Thank you Google. It’s the little innovations like this that make me continue using Chrome above other browsers.

End Of The Week Roundup: 05/11/12

Well it’s been a pretty busy week with my lovely wife, friends, family, and the Ali Monster. Highlights of the week was us bringing Ali for a 3k and seeing The Avengers but overall it was just a pretty good (if busy) week. It was also the first week since before surgery I haven’t had to goto the doctor! (Though I do have a follow up appointment for next week.)

Life

  • Leah and I had dinner with her parents
  • Saturday night we had dinner at Taphouse with Jason, the other Jason, Megan, and Margret
  • With the same crew as above and adding in Rob we all went to see The Avengers
  • We also took Ali on a 3k walk for Wellness House followed by breakfast with her parents.
  • Not to ignore my family we also went to a BBQ my parents were having where my mother’s side of the family and grandparents from my dad’s side where at (Ali joined on that as well.)

RIP Maurice Sendak 1928 – 2012

by Stuart Conover on May 8, 2012

When I was a child I was fascinated with the world of Where The Wild Things Are. I believe my grandmother actually was the one to introduce me to this book. Maybe it was these gentle monsters that helped usher me into my love for horror but either way they were truly a masterpiece for when I was growing up and it’s a sad day that their author and illustrator has passed from our world.

The Avengers Movie Really Got It Right

by Stuart Conover on May 7, 2012

The Avengers film really got things right and I am so pleased with it I knew I needed to write something (spoiler free) on it.

The film is smart, funny, fully of action, well written, delivers great one liners, delivers great visuals, and most importantly is true to it’s super hero roots, In fact I would go so far as to say that I felt The Avengers was also the only film to ever truly capture the feeling that you were actually watching a comic book on the big screen.

The characters each were able to get their own screen time and each were able to make their own time shine so that no one was left out. EVERY character was able to shine – including the Hulk. This would be the first film that I truly felt that the Hulk was done justice. Don’t get me wrong the Edward Norton film wasn’t bad.. but it wasn’t this. Iron Man was pulled off so well in his own first 2 films that you may wonder how he was here? I would have to say you see Tony Stark grow as a person even in this one. Captain America comes to terms with being a living legend and starts to deal with being a man out of time. Thor is shown as a God among men but still has his failings and a vulnerability that I wasn’t sure how they could pull of. Black Widow and Hawkeye both get more actual screen time and we get to learn a bit more about them though I feel if anything that while Black Widow felt more real in here than Iron Man 2 that Hawkeye is still a bit lacking. This isn’t something you will feel in the film but as a comic lover one of his main points is that he’s just a man and works constantly to go out of his way to be worthy of fitting in with a group of actual super heroes. Nick Fury is shown as the perfect spy master who orchestrates even more than you initially see and they give him added depth by showing that he isn’t happy on what he’s doing but it’s what must be done. Finally Loki is able to come off as a true villain and while his end goal isn’t on his usual agenda in the Marvel Universe it’s not that far off on how he acts in Ultimate Marvel where the ‘majority’ of how these movies draw their character’s actions from.

One of the best parts was that even if you are not a comic book fan – you have it in you to enjoy this movie. While it was full of clearly written for comic geek moments it was accessible to be enjoyed by anyone even if you didn’t get all of the small references that were peppered throughout the film.

I honestly had no idea the movie was 2 and a half hours long while watching it. The characters flow so well together that even though they have just met you can see the chemistary that they develop. You see them group as characters, a group, and even in some cases as friends. The chemistry that builds up gives us most of the film’s funnier moments and the humor I think is what really humanizes the film. It lets even non-comic fans get lost in the action and humor on screen as everything is timed and written just perfectly for it to happen.

Overall this is what Marvel has been working since the first Iron Man movie to build towards and between the combination of the groundwork they have already created and ending it what is the best (in my opinion) comic super hero film to date – they have succeeded.

(Side note: I would love to give credit where it’s due on the image but really have no idea where it came from.)

Who Is Thanos?

by Stuart Conover on April 30, 2012

Back in January I wrote how The Thanos Imperative got me back into Marvel comics. But that doesn’t really explain who is Thanos?

Thanos was born on Titan and belongs to an advanced alien race where, much as we have mutants in the X-Men on Earth he is a mutant to his people. While accepted by his race he never felt at home and in his youth become obsessed with death. It begins with being a nihilist but ends up with him yearning for the embodiment of Death itself and attempts to woo her by sacrificing millions to her. He is powerful beyond means, extremely intelligent, can use magic, and has telepathy and telekinesis styled powers.

He brings two wars to the cosmos before I became really interested in his character. He was just another villain that was willing to destroy worlds – until The Infinity Gauntlet. With it he destroys half of the Marvel Universe in the blink of an eye including some of the major hitters in the Marvel Universe. It all ends up being undone but it’s the first major crossover that I couldn’t stop reading.

Shortly after that he was involved in a story line known as The Infinity Abyss that involved Thanos making clones of himself while trying to engineer a new race of Gods.

This ends up leading into the Annihilation Wave which was where a galactic being wanted to destroy the universe completely know as Annihilus leaving himself as the only provider. While Thanos courts Death he no longer believes that destroying the universe is the way to do so and ends up being killed while attempting to stop Annihilus’ plan from coming to fruition. He is seen shortly after this as Death’s consort and no longer among the living.

Of course death is not something that is almost ever permanent in the Marvel Universe. Another cosmic entity known as Oblivion resurrects Thanos to be the new Avatar of Death. This causes him to not only return to the living but be banished into an alternate Universe that had found a way to prevent death from occurring and killed his mistress there by making a deal with some Cthulhu styled Gods. Regardless Thanos is currently gone but not forgotten.

What’s Thanos been up to as of late? Well Thanos hasn’t been in the limelight since then (at the end of the Imperative timeline he ended up stuck in another dimension) but there are some Internet rumors that he’s about to make a big splash in Marvel. I won’t go into the big spoiler I ran across but let’s just say Thanos, if it’s true, is going to be huge once again in the near future. (Also let me tell you I HATE spoilers and am so pissed that I stumbled across it.)

End Of The Week Roundup: 04/27/12

Week 2 of being off of work due to surgery. While I was still loopy the first half of the week I will admit that I was probably OK to go back on Thursday. I already had the time scheduled off so made sure to keep myself busy with getting a slew of chores done that I hadn’t had a chance to do previously and I’m happy I had an extra day to spend with my wife when she was off on Thursday.

Life

  • Went out for breakfast with my mother one day while off this last week
  • Another trip to the doctor and my nose is getting even closer to being better (mental note: splints being removed is uncomfortable)
  • Leah instructed Ali to take care of me during the day even though I was back to being self sufficient at this point. Ali tried to tell me to just be a pillow so she could lay on me and sleep
